Draw a stick figure on a blank piece of paper. Now, crumble it! Stomp on it. Rub some dirt on it. Lay it down on a flat surface, and run your hand over it in an attempt to flatten the paper back out. Each time you make a mass with your hand, say something positive. "You have beautiful hair." "Your skin is flawless." You have a pure heart." Notice that, no matter how many times you run your hand over that paper, once it was crumbled and stained, it will never look the same as it did before? Bullying works the same way. No matter how much you try to lift that person back up, they have changed. They may be more reserved, more cautious, shy and "backwards".
If you lay that paper under a book, for a very long time, it may become flat again. You may be able to pick it up again without it's creased edges sticking out, but the lines and stains will never completely go away. People may be able to "bounce back" just the same as that piece of paper, but the scars will remain forever imbedded in their hearts and minds. This is something, as a society, we must understand.
We want the violence to end in our schools. We want the suicide rates to decrease. We write our Congressmen about the issues at hand, but WE are honestly the only ones who have any control over our society. We must treat others with decency to obtain decency.
